Edit Technician Drawer

The Edit Technician drawer lets you update a technician's core record — from their name and address to their pay structure, skills, and tags. The drawer uses a multi-step wizard layout with accordion navigation, so you can expand the section you need and move between steps without losing your place.

Who Can Access This

RoleCan Edit Technicians
AdministratorYes, except pay, tax, and date of birth
OfficeYes, except pay, tax, and date of birth
SalesYes, except pay, tax, and date of birth
HR AdminYes, except pay, tax, and date of birth
Payroll AdminYes, including pay, tax, and date of birth
Field TechnicianNo
note

Pay structure, compensation, tax information, and date of birth are technician pay details. They appear in the drawer only for users with the Payroll Admin add-on, including Administrators. Everyone else with edit access sees the drawer without those fields. Contact your administrator if the Edit button is not available.

Opening the Drawer

  1. Go to Office > Technicians.
  2. Click a technician's name to open their profile.
  3. Click the Edit button in the top-right header of the profile.

The drawer opens and loads the technician's current information. It uses an accordion layout with four collapsible sections: Personal Info, Employment, Tax Info, and Tags & Skills. Click any section header to expand it. You can also use the Next and Back buttons to step through the sections in order. Next checks the current section first and stays on it until any required or invalid field is fixed.

Some sections of the profile also have their own Edit shortcuts. For example, clicking Edit on the Pay Structure card opens the drawer directly to the Employment section.

You can also open the Edit Technician drawer from the technician quick action menu next to a technician's name, for example on the technician list, the technician details panel, a job's Summary tab, a technician's schedule panel, and the Timesheets grid. Click the dropdown arrow next to the technician name and select Edit Technician. The menu shows Edit Technician only when your role has the Edit Technicians permission.

Personal Info Section

The Personal Info section contains the technician's name, date of birth, emergency contact, and address information.

Name

FieldRequiredNotes
PrefixNoMr., Mrs., Ms., Dr., Rev.
First NameYes—
M.I.NoSingle character middle initial
Last NameYes—
note

Email and phone number are managed through the Contact Methods section in the technician profile, not the Edit drawer. They do not appear here when editing an existing record.

Date of Birth

Enter the technician's date of birth using the numeric input fields (MM/DD/YYYY). This field is used for HR records. The numeric format prevents date-picker formatting issues and allows fast keyboard entry. When you edit an existing technician, this field appears only if you have the Payroll Admin add-on.

Emergency Contact

FieldRequired
Emergency Contact NameNo
Emergency Contact PhoneNo

Mailing Address

FieldRequired
Address Line 1No
Address Line 2No (apt, suite, unit)
CityNo
StateNo
ZIP CodeNo

Physical Address

Check Same as Mailing to copy the mailing address as the physical address. Uncheck it to enter a separate physical address using the same fields.

Employment Section

The Employment section covers pay structure, compensation details, hire date, PTO policy, incentive pay model, and driver's license information.

Pay Structure

The pay fields appear only for users with the Payroll Admin add-on. They are Hourly Employee, Hourly Rate, Min Hourly Rate, Max Hourly Rate and Annual Salary, the same fields as MaidCentral V2. There is no Pay Type to select: each job is paid by the Pay Type on its scope of work. See Pay Structure.

What do Hourly Rate, Min Hourly Rate and Max Hourly Rate do?

The fields are grouped as Hourly rates and Salary. Enter a salary or hourly rates, not both.

  • Hourly Rate: paid per hour for hourly work. On commission jobs, pay is raised to at least this rate per hour.
  • Min Hourly Rate: this technician's own minimum wage. Payroll uses whichever is higher, this rate or your company minimum wage.
  • Max Hourly Rate: on commission jobs, caps pay per hour. 0 means no cap.
  • Annual Salary: see What the Salary field does below.

All fields show whether or not Hourly Employee is ticked, because the hourly rates also apply to technicians paid by commission.

When you add a new technician, the step has Pay Per Scope of Work, where you enter the technician's rates for each scope of work. After the technician is created, those rates are edited on the profile's Pay Structure section. See Pay Structure.

What the Salary field does

The Annual Salary amount is stored on the employee's record and shown in the technician profile's Pay Structure section, where the Pay Type reads Salary whenever a salary is set, even if an Hourly Rate is also saved. In Pulse it is mainly a marker that the employee is salaried. Any salary above $0 has three effects:

  • No job pay. Every job timesheet for a salaried technician shows Pay $0.00, on every scope pay type, the same as MaidCentral V2. Their gross pay comes from Additional Pay entries.
  • No minimum-wage make-up pay. Payroll does not add Supplemental Pay (the top-up to minimum wage) for salaried employees.
  • No automatic company-holiday pay. On the Paid Time Off payroll page, company holidays add pay rows only for employees without a salary. Approved time-off requests still appear for salaried employees.

What it does not do:

  • Pulse does not pay the salary automatically. No salary pay is added to payroll.
  • Pulse's payroll calculations do not use the salary amount for overtime or PTO accrual, and do not spread it across jobs.
note

Clearing Annual Salary and saving stops the technician being salaried. Blank pay fields save as $0.

Compensation

The Compensation subsection appears below the pay structure fields. It includes additional payroll-related fields such as overtime rules, bonus eligibility, and other compensation details configured for your company. These fields are saved together with the pay structure when you save the drawer.

note

A previous issue where payroll fields were not saving correctly has been resolved. All compensation and pay structure changes now persist reliably when you click Save Changes.

Hourly Employee

The Hourly Employee checkbox is available in the Employment section. When checked, the technician's pay is calculated based on actual clock hours rather than job commission. This setting is reflected throughout the system — for example, an "Hourly" badge appears next to the technician's name in Timesheets.

Employment Details

Hire Date — the technician's start date.

Current Team — shown as read-only in edit mode. Team assignments are managed through the Teams settings. The current team name is displayed for reference.

PTO Policy — select the paid time off accrual policy that applies to this technician. Leave blank if no policy applies.

Incentive Pay Model — select the incentive pay model this technician is evaluated against during incentive pay runs. A technician can be on one model. Leave blank, or choose None to remove them from a model, to exclude them: a technician with no model is skipped in every incentive pay preview. Shown only when Incentive Pay is turned on for your company and you have the Payroll Admin add-on. See Incentive Pay.

Driver's License

FieldRequired
License NumberNo
License StateNo

Why does the license number show only the last four characters?

The license number is masked to its last four characters everywhere it appears, on the profile and in the Edit Technician drawer.

  • Click the eye button next to the number to show the full number. Each use is recorded.
  • Leaving the masked value as it is and saving keeps the stored number.
  • To remove the license, clear License Number and click Save Changes. Clear License State too to remove the state.

Tax Info Section

The Tax Info section stores withholding information used in payroll calculations. It appears only for users with the Payroll Admin add-on.

FieldNotes
Federal Tax CreditsCredits claimed on the technician's federal withholding form
State Tax CreditsCredits claimed on the state withholding form
WithholdingsAdditional withholding amount
warning

Tax information directly affects payroll calculations. Consult with your accountant before making changes. Incorrect values may result in under- or over-withholding.

Tags & Skills Section

The Tags & Skills section lets you assign skills and tags and control how the technician appears in the system.

Skills & Certifications

The top section shows Assigned Skills — all skills currently linked to this technician. Click a skill badge to remove it.

The bottom section shows Available Skills — skills not yet assigned. Use the search box to find a skill by name. Click a skill to add it.

Skills are used to match technicians with jobs that require specific qualifications.

Tags

Assigned Tags shows all tags currently applied. Click a tag to remove it.

Available Tags shows active tags not yet applied. Use the search box to filter. Click a tag to add it.

Tags help filter and group technicians in lists and reports.

Settings

Show on Scheduler — when checked, this technician appears on the job scheduler for assignment. Uncheck to temporarily hide them from scheduling without deactivating their record. Technicians with it off can't be picked when you add a shift from the Schedule board.

Bio

Enter a short bio for the technician. The bio appears on customer scorecards and other public-facing displays.

Saving Changes

Click Save Changes at the bottom of the drawer to save all edits across all four sections. The button shows Saving... while the update is processing.

Click Cancel to close the drawer without saving. If you changed any field or checkbox, Pulse asks you to confirm first: choose Keep Editing to return to the form, or Discard Changes to close it and lose your edits. Clicking outside the drawer or pressing Esc asks the same question. Two kinds of change are not covered by this check: contact rows, which save only when you click that row's own Save button, and tags. Save a contact row before closing, and click Save Changes first if you only added or removed tags.

If there are validation errors, the drawer highlights the fields that need attention. The relevant accordion section expands automatically to show the first error.

Tips

  • All sections save together — you do not need to save each section separately. All changes across all four sections are saved with one click of Save Changes.
  • Edit a specific section quickly — some cards on the technician profile have an Edit shortcut that opens the drawer directly on the relevant section. For example, clicking Edit on the Pay Structure card jumps to the Employment section.
  • Quick access — use the Edit Technician option in the technician quick action menu next to a technician's name to open the drawer without navigating to the technician profile first.
  • Skills affect job matching — keep skills up to date when technicians complete new training or earn certifications. Accurate skills make it easier to assign the right person to specialized jobs.
  • Tags are for filtering and grouping — use tags to create groups like "Spanish Speaking", "New Hire", or "Driver License Expired". You can then filter the technician list by tag.
  • Show on Scheduler toggle — if a technician is on extended leave, uncheck Show on Scheduler to remove them from scheduling views without deactivating their full record.
  • Bio appears on scorecards — keep the bio professional. Customers see it when viewing their service history and scorecard results.

Troubleshooting

The Edit button does not appear

Your role may not have permission to edit technician records. Contact your administrator to confirm your access level.

Save Changes fails with an error

The drawer shows a red error message if the save fails. Common causes include a validation error on a required field or a network timeout. Check the required fields in each section, then try again.

The team cannot be changed here

Team assignment is managed through the Teams settings and the technician's schedule configuration. The Edit drawer shows the current team for reference only.

Email and phone fields are missing

Contact information is managed through the Contact Methods section in the technician profile, not the Edit drawer. Navigate to the profile and look for the Contact Methods card to update email or phone.

Skills or tags are not available

Skills are configured in Settings > Skills & Tags. If no skills appear, ask your administrator to set them up there first. Tags are also managed through that settings area.
